The Menifee Relay For Life took place in May, however the organizing committee has been busy planning and running additional Relay events so they had not reconvened to recount the Menifee event until now.
Although it doesn’t take a monetary tally to measure the success of the Relay for Life event, together all 30 teams raised over $60,000 with one more fundraising event coming up. Since Relay for Life began in Menifee six years ago, each year has produced a progressively larger donation for the American Cancer Society.
We followed Mike Castillejos and his Banking on a Cure team throughout their fundraising efforts and into the actual Relay event, and it has been exciting to watch them meet and exceed their goal by over $1,000. Together the Banking on a Cure team alone raised over $4,000.
Saturday morning started with unanimous joy and determination. Dozens of cancer survivors in matching purple shirts proudly took the field at Paloma Valley High School to walk the kick-off lap for Menifee’s 6th annual Relay For Life weekend.
A central stage located in the middle of the high school track blared motivating music and announcements throughout the event as well as several musical and entertaining performances.
The ultimate goal of the weekend is to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society, but also to bring people together for a common cause. Many smiles were shared, and tears were shed as participants and bystanders celebrated, remembered, and continued the fight (against cancer).
As the sun dipped low on Saturday evening, the night’s events turned toward honoring the memory of the many loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer. Volunteers placed hundreds of luminaries around the track as teary-eyed people tenderly took in the scene.
For safety, the gates were closed and locked at 10 PM but Relay teams continued to walk all night long; taking turns, encouraging each other, and experiencing something both powerful and emotionally moving.
As morning made it’s appearance, after enjoying a deliciously catered buffet breakfast talkative children shared stories with their parents as they toted their sleeping bags and official Relay For Life tee shirts to the cars to go home.
While a much smaller crowd than the day before, teams continued the final laps right up until 9 AM. Even after 24 hours of walking for the cause, the level of enthusiasm and excitement on Sunday morning nearly matched that of the start.
Carefully selected empowering songs revived walkers for the last few moments, right up until they placed the Fight Back banner on the stage.
Relay For Life undoubtedly brings our community together in a special way. Fully recovered from the weekend, Menifee is excited to begin planning and raising for another Relay in 2013.
Menifee Relay For Life is holding a Wrap-up party for all of the participants and volunteers and would like to extend an invitation to the public, and anyone who is interested in getting more involved with Relay For Life. The barbecue is scheduled for Thursday, June 28th at 6:30 PM at the Bay Club, 30416 Laguna Vista Menifee, CA 92584.
