Abby Chea and Daniel Diaz, two of the three winners of the "What I Like About Menifee" writing contest, had lunch with Menifee Mayor John Denver last Saturday, June 2.
The lunch event, which was hosted by Breakfast Club of Menifee, was part of the overall prize package.
When asked what they liked the most about being in the essay contest, having breakfast with the Mayor seemed hard to beat, as the pair of winners sat with Denver and listened with their full attention.
"Shaking the mayor's hand", Abby responded when asked what she liked most about being in the contest. Daniel also agreed, who said "Meeting the Mayor" was his highlight of the contest.
Jonathan Hoefler, the other winner of the contest, could not attend the lunch, due to a previously scheduled commitment. To make up for it, the mayor went to Ridgemoor Elementary and had lunch with him the day before. They sat on the stage and enjoyed pizza from Jonathan's mom with the entire 5th grade class.
"This is the most marvelous experience since Menifee was incorporated." Denver said after having lunch Saturday. "The contest has generated more, fun, excitement, and enthusiasm than any other activity we have done in Menifee."
Tracy and Stu Blaze, owners of the Breakfast Club of Menifee agreed. The couple, who opened up their restaurant in 2009, helped promote the essay contest and paid for the lunch event. "We are glad we could be a part of the contest. Giving back to the kids is our highest priority." said Tracy.
The contest, which was organized by Menifee 24/7 and Arts Council Menifee, fetched almost 100 applicants from Menifee-area students ranging from kindergarten to 8th grades. Judges read through the essays and selected three winning articles, along with a fourth "honorable mention".
I am honored and pleased that Menifee 24/7 and The Arts Council came together to form the contest" said Linda Denver, a retired educator and current Vice President of Arts Council Menifee. "We look forward to do other contests to draw out the talent of people who live in Menifee."
