What Started It All?
In 1905 a man named Paul Harris started a business concern that he wanted to be both ethical and would serve his community. The Rotary name came about as rotating meetings were held among members' offices.
This vision has been spreading across the nation for over 100 years into what is today known as Rotary International, yielding over 1.2 million members worldwide.
The Rotary Club, among many things, has been instrumental in eradicating Polio in all but three countries; Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
When Did Rotary Start in Menifee?
Menifee’s Rotary Club was started in 1963, under the name Sun City Rotary, and will celebrate its 50th anniversary next March of 2013.
The Rotary Mission:
Every Rotary member makes a vow, Service Above Self.
The Four-Way Test, a code of ethics, implores members to ask themselves:
Of the things we think, say or do
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
It is this selfless way of functioning that has made the Rotary concept a worldwide mission.
What Does Rotary Do in Menifee?
Menifee’s Rotary is very youth oriented and facilitates dozens of programs, which benefit local schools, children, and teens. One of their most recent initiatives presented 1,050 third grade students from Menifee and Romoland schools with dictionaries as part of their Literacy Program.
Over the past year they have handed out many scholarships including one for $3,000 to Mt. San Jacinto College and to Paloma High School students.
This year six local high-school juniors were provided the opportunity to attend leadership training in the mountains as part of their Leadership Program. Many students have also been recognized with Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.
What Does Menifee Rotary Do Internationally?
Menifee Rotary has teamed up with Rotary Club partners around the world in a global effort to provide more people with clean, safe drinking water.
They are currently working on 5 projects, one in the Dominican Republic, two in India, and two in Guatemala to teach these affected impoverished towns how to have and maintain clean water.
Together Rotary Clubs are building wells and clean water systems.
What Do They Have Planned?
Beginning in September, 60 Inland Empire Rotary Clubs will venture to collect and distribute one million meals to those in need. These meals will go to community pantries including the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard.
How Do They Fundraise?
The Rotary is constantly working to raise and donate money, with their two biggest fundraisers of the year happening in the fall.
The Mayor’s Ball, already set for Saturday, September 29, 2012 is a formal affair seeking to raise funds by way of ticket sales, silent and live auctions, and other fun interactions. The public is invited to come dance the night away and sponsor a table, if you are so inclined.
Menifee Motor Madness will take place on October 13, 2012 in conjunction with the City’s birthday party. Over 230 vintage cars from 1974 and before will be on display, as will vendors. A pancake breakfast fundraiser will kick off the day at 6:30 AM.
How Can You Be A Part?
The Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 11:45 AM at Menifee Lakes Country Club, and welcomes new members and interested parties. Join many of Menifee’s prominent people as they work for a better community.
