January usually feels a little lackluster. While it’s the start of a fabulous new year, the deflation from all of the holiday anticipation can leave us longing for something a little more exciting.
To spice up the week, we rounded up our favorite five nearby day trips to take you some place a little less ordinary. Each full day of family fun is just under an hour and a half drive from Menifee.
Old Town San Diego: Always Sunny
Approximately: 1 hour 15 minutes, 72 miles
Old Town San Diego is the perfect little place to enjoy a 70-degree day all while taking in the official Birthplace of California. Riddled with historical landmarks and educational sites, this Spanish style town is fun for the whole family. Festivals and entertainment are often present in the parks during weekend days. Don’t forget to stop in to one of the many Mexican restaurants for some authentic chips and salsa, and perhaps a refreshing adult beverage.
To Do: Learn something new.
Big Bear: Winter Wonderland
Approximately: 1 hour 30 minutes, 72 miles
We like south shore Big Bear for the perfect combination of snow, food, and outdoor fun. Just off of Big Bear Boulevard amidst snowy-topped pine trees, The Village offers a plethora of dining and shopping options. Or if you’d rather play the day away, Big Bear Snow Park invites you to try your luck at tubing down one of their freshly groomed hills. Either way, Big Bear promises big fun.
To do: Build a snowman.
Idyllwild: Peaceful and Quiet
Approximately: 1 hour, 39 miles
Idyllwild is the ideal place to escape the every day chaos of city life. Located in the San Jacinto Mountains amongst pine and cedar trees, this forest town is the perfect chance to unwind and recharge. Maintaining it’s small town appeal, the locally owned mom and pop businesses will help you leave behind the mainstream mayhem and enjoy homemade happiness. Plenty of hiking and mountain biking paths will keep your feet busy all day.
To Do: Breathe the mountain air.
Palm Desert: Unique Experience
Approximately: 1 hour 9 minutes, 65 miles
Palm Springs promises pleasantly warm weather nearly all year long. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway makes a unique day trip destination sure to entertain all ages. Transporting you up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon to 8,500 feet, the ride to the top is nothing short of spectacular. Once at the top indulge in one of the exciting snow activities, including the ideal outdoor playground, or dine at one of their dazzling restaurants.
To do: Enjoy the view.
Julian: Outdoor Enjoyment
Approximately: 1 hour 30 minutes, 76 miles
Located in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains, Julian is a quaint historic town. Dating back to the gold rush days, the town portrays good old-fashioned charm. Shops are housed in historical buildings and picnic spots are prevalent amid giant oak trees. Take a ride in a horse drawn carriage, sample some famous homemade apple pie, and check out an art gallery all in the same small town.
To do: Soak up the sun.
The only problem now, is deciding which trip to take first.
