Saturday’s Community Barn Dance and Food Drive proved to be a boot stomping, swing your partner, all-out uplifting occasion. Over seventy Menifee residents made it out to the Wheatfield Park Community Center in support of the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard.
Shortly after 7 p.m. the festivities were already well under way. Bill and Colleen Ackerman, who looked every bit ready to barn dance the night away in their matching plaid ensembles, hosted the evening.
Bill, in full dance instructor mode complete with hands free microphone headset, lead each dance with step-by-step instructions interjecting little bits of folk dance history along the way.
Everyone enthusiastically packed the linoleum (dance) floor, attempting to navigate through the first line dance steps by means of a unison grape vine. The lively music added to an already animated crowd, who showed admirable determination through out each and every dance number.
The soundtrack ranged from timeless favorites including Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean, to classic country songs and folk melodies. Participants of all ages clapped along with the beat, clearly enjoying the atmosphere and good company.
Perhaps the most successful outcome of the evening, however, was the bag upon plastic grocery bag of donated canned food. While the event was free to the public, attendees were asked to donate non-perishable food items in place of a ticket price.
While people may have come for the fun and dancing, the overflowing donation bin showed the caring side of community support. In total the Cupboard added 350 pounds of food and $70 cash donation to their community cupboard.
The very grateful Community Cupboard carted away an entire van full of enough donations to help stock their supply for the impending holiday season.
