Nominated by teachers and principals at their respective school sites, four remarkable high school seniors were recognized at this month’s Student of the Month luncheon on October 12th, 2011. Hosted by the Perris Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce, this luncheon provided the opportunity for school staff members to share stories about each of the students, as well as present them with individual certificates, gifts, and congratulations from family members as well as local businesses.
Destinee Speights from Choice 2000 was selected by her teacher Steve Maxey, who describes her “as a very delightful and intelligent young lady.” Choosing to avoid the cliques of high school and complete her courses online, she has found her experience to very successful. Graduating this November with a 4.0, Destinee plans on attending Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute to pursue a career as a pastry chef. Destinee shared that he grandfather had passed away from diabetes, so she hopes to create diabetes-friendly desserts in his honor.
Heritage High School’s senior Zedma Sandoval is known for her involvement on campus as well as in the community. Having been involved with the school ASB for four years, Zedma is also the manager of the cross country team and is involved with the FFA program on campus and the Relay for Life committee. Zedma is described by both staff members and her family as a mature and intelligent young leader who cherishes her family and her education. Her dream is to attend Columbia University and pursue a degree in Political Science.
Taking over the operation of Paloma Valley High School’s JROTC program, senior Cameron Lyons has proven himself to be an outstanding leader among his peers. He was able to take command of his entire unit and see to the daily operations of the program. Alongside this, Cameron has maintained a strong academic profile as well as has remained involved with community bible studies. Former JROTC teacher Sgt. Barnes has high hopes for Cameron, claiming that with his plans to join the Marines and continue his military career after high school, “anything he does, he will do well.”
Possessing extreme amounts of determination, Perris High School senior Everardo Ibarra Martinez has overcome several obstacles in order to achieve his current 4.6 GPA. Immigrating to the United States with his family from Mexico, Everardo entered school in the third grade knowing very little English. He has now progressed to becoming one of ten students in the entire United States who was given the opportunity to spend three weeks traveling Germany and studying German. As well as being involved with water polo and swimming, Everardo has always proved to his teachers that he strives to be challenged. He plans on attending Columbia University to study chemical engineering.
Each of these students was chosen for this honor based on their integrity, determination to achieve their goals, their love for learning, and involvement in their school and community.
