I am going to take credit for part of the "making" of my buddy, Bret Blake. Over 20 years ago, my cousin Gina came from Utah for a week long visit. As soon as my husband's cousin, Walter, laid eyes on Gina, he KNEW he was going to make her his. She said "no, you're too short" several times, but eventually, she was his. And then together they made 5 beautiful children, one of whom is Bret.
Bret was born with Down Syndrome. Over the last 15 years, Gina has shared with me the ups and downs of being a parent with a Down Syndrome child. On the downside, I know it is a lot of work, and the medical bills can be devastating. On the upside, children like Bret bring so much joy to others, through their innocence and loving ways. Whenever I go to Utah, Gina's house is always my first stop, and I can't wait to get my big hug from Bret and to check out his latest dance moves and hear his newest karaoke songs.
My Uncle Mike and Aunt Gloria, have a daughter, Bridgette, who also has Down Syndrome. I love seeing them at our huge family reunions. Having grown up as a middle child with 6 brothers, and 3 sisters, I have always loved Bridgette's sassy little attitude. What a joy she is!
I have heard it said before that God has bestowed a "special look" upon his most beloved children. A look so distinct that upon first glance one would know how special this person was to Him. And, that He has entrusted these earthly angels to only a few select families. Special parents. Special families. When I think of Bridgette and Bret, I believe this to be true. As I meet other Down Syndrome families throughout my life, my beliefs are always confirmed. There is a wonderful, special feeling whenever they're around.
If you want to feel especially good this weekend, come join The Inland Empire Buddy Walk this Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Mt. San Jacinto College. The event benefits the Down Syndrome Association of Hemet, and there will be a Health and Safety Fair, fire engines, police cars, face painting, clowns, exotic animals and bounce houses, raffles and a silent auction.
I hope to see you there!
