Of all things for an animal shelter to be doing, having a garage sale seems like the last thing that would be on the list. But Sun City K-9 Adoptions is planning for just such an under taking come mid November.
Founded in 2003 by Elizabeth Martin, at ninety-one years old today she's still taking care of animals and living her dream. Elizabeth, along with Sun City K9 vice president, Kim Goble, received the mayor's commendation at a recent Menifee City Council meeting for their years of service to the community.
The city of Menifee recognized them not only for their commitment to community contribution but also for dedicating their lives to the protection of animals. Kim and Elizabeth are still very much involved in every aspect of their beloved rescue.
Jeremy Robles Senior, a trusted volunteer for several years, recently joined the staff making him one, of only four, paid employees. When describing the many other volunteers and few staff members, Elizabeth sentimentally says, "they leave me speechless when trying to explain how devoted they are to the mission we claim and provide."
While Liz, as everyone lovingly calls her, still lives on the property and enjoys the company of many canines, volunteers and staff members help Kim oversee and maintain the majority of the organization. Although some employees work nine-hour days seven days a week, the duty doesn’t seem to faze them in the slightest.
Since their inception, over the course of the past eight years, Sun City K9 Adoptions has helped find homes for over 3,000 animals.
When asked what keeps Jeremy working hard every day, his response was simple, “It’s not about me. It’s all about the animals.” And there in lies the true essence of Sun City K-9.
Seven days a week their day starts bright and early at 7:30 when together the team begins cleaning the kennels, washing dogs, feeding, playing, loving, and holding; all of this before 9:30 am when they officially open to the public.
As a 100 percent 501C nonprofit, this Sun City rescue relies entirely on community support and generosity. Aside from the four staff members, the shelter is run entirely by a collection of devoted volunteers.
As a recognized no-kill rescue, they are the first choice for abandoned animals. “Many times we come to work in the morning to find animals tied to the gate or even thrown over the fence,” Jeremy sadly recounts, “but we take them all in just the same.”
It is because of their dedication to remaining no-kill that Sun City K-9 remains privately held. Despite their nonprofit listing they receive no help or funding from the county or state to ensure that they never have to euthanize. It is their original mission, and one that is upheld to this day.
Upon entering the small dog play area it is evident these dogs are loved. A plethora of wagging tails excitedly come running through a courtyard abundant with dog toys and tennis balls.
Referring to the dozen or so little tongues and tails anxiously surrounding my feet as we walk though the yard, Liz urges me “Just hold them, they just want to be held.” You can’t help but feel a pang of compassion as you watch this tireless team taking care of countless canine friends.
High school students log community service hours by volunteering on weekends and elderly residents are encouraged to come and socialize with the animals too. To see the commitment of so many kindhearted people, this rescue emanates more love than most shelters ever could.
When Jeremy came on board he immediately went to work on his first task, which was to tear down outdated kennels that weren’t up to code and rebuild new ones. With the help and generosity of Home Depot they were able to buy all the supplies necessary to build sturdy new chain link kennels complete with overhead cooling misters.
Local area plumbers donated their time and services to take care of the drainage system and install the misters to keep the dogs cool during hot summer months.
Even with all of the donations and charitable contributions there is always more to be done. Hence, the impending garage sale.
From now until November 10th they will be gladly accepting any donations from the general public. If there is something you would like to contribute, donations can be dropped off directly to the rescue location. For more information please see the flier below.
And if you’re in the market for a new furry friend, well this is definitely your destination.
