Last Saturday afternoon, June 18th, a huge crowd of over 700 people gathered to form the biggest turn out for Southwest Riverside County Boxing Club's Annual "Fight for Life" fundraiser.
Boxers from Riverside County and areas as far as Las Vegas got together at Menifee's Valley-Wide Recreation & Park District Gym for the Riverside County Youth Amateur Boxing Championship. All profits earned from this event was donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital where cancer research, medical treatments, and medical services are provided for families in need.
The Boxing Championship is annually directed by Steve Harriman, owner of Canyon Martial Arts and Southwest Riverside County Boxing Club. Harriman has long thrived in helping kids, but was mainly driven to create this event by his grandson, who at the age of ten, had a brain tumor and could not afford medical attention to get it removed. A large golf tournament fundraiser was then arranged for his grandson and with great success, enough money was raised to get his tumor removed. Inspired by this touching experience, Harriman decided he would save up money to make the "Fight for Life" Fundraiser an annual event.
With Saturday being only the third year that the Southwest Riverside County Boxing Club has made this fundraiser possible, the crowd had doubled in size from the previous years. The youth boxers made an impressive performance and fought with all their might to make the atmosphere intense and enjoyable.
Booths with jewelry, clothes, and food were arranged for attendees. With the great success this year's Championship, much joy was shared by all to be supporting such a wonderful occasion and cause.
